Context is Important

erquiet:

There is no question that the shootings in CT were tragic - I remember the pain of losing my brother and can’t fathom losing a child.  Like other, softer voices, not often heard in the media, I believe the best approach to any problem is one that is well-reasoned and logical.  It should take into account context.  What kills more people in the US - guns, alcohol or HIV/AIDS?  It’s alcohol.  If the problem is people are dying, let’s ban everything that has been responsible for a death. The list would include cars, swimming pools, sex, beer, airplanes, rope and stairs.  If the problem is people are coming unglued and killing other people, then I would offer that the problem is to understand why people are coming unglued.  We are a community, like it or not. Why aren’t we checking on each other - does political correctness bother us so much that we can’t reach out to a friend/co-worker/neighbor to say - “You don’t seem quite right today” or “I noticed your child wasn’t playing with the other kids; can I help make some introductions?”  The problem isn’t guns - or pools or cars for that matter.  The problem is we seem to have stopped being concerned about one another.  Everybody is busy - work, family, social - I get that.  But I would offer that concern for one another is going to become a life or death decision soon.

This post kind of went sideways … sorry about that.  Read the article though.  It may help frame some of the things you’re thinking about.

Snorange County ?

What in the world? I remember my mom telling me about how it snowed in Long Beach in the 30’ s or 40’s but never expected this. I am glad there are a lot more pictures this time around so when the kids of today can tell there kids it surely happened. But who knows by the snow will probably come out of the ice machine

So my friend is an RA here at UC Irvine and he went to Chik Fil-A with his residents. The cashier did NOT ask for their names, but when they got their receipts, this is what they said. If you know anything about UCI, you probably know that we have a reputation as being an Asian-dominant school. Fifty-three percent, actually. And while the victims of this act are indeed Asian, it shouldn’t matter. The fact that ignorant language like this is used to describe people is UNACCEPTABLE.

“I went to talk to the manager, and I told him that this cannot happen ever again. I chose to be calm about it, but I was ready to go off. I made it known that it wasn’t okay, and that I didn’t appreciate it whatsoever. I think I indirectly fired Lia…”
 - RA Friend

I thought people had learned after what happened to the girl from UCLA, but apparently not. Racism is still alive these days, people.
